Direct answer
Short answer: If knees still hurt on hardwood even with a thick mat, add Bodyprox protective knee pads for kneeling sets, and use a Gaiam yoga block (latex-free EVA) to bring the floor closer in forward folds and balances. Keep a 1/2-inch Amazon Basics yoga mat as the base layer — see our thickness guide for mat-only choices. This is comfort gear, not medical treatment for knee injuries.
Comparison
| Tool | What it does | Reach for it when… | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2-inch yoga mat | Base cushion under hands/knees/spine | Everyday yoga/pilates on hardwood | May still feel thin for kneeling HIIT |
| Bodyprox knee pads | Extra foam over the knee | Lunges, floor abs, cleaning-adjacent workouts | Not a brace for diagnosed injuries |
| Gaiam yoga block | Raises the floor for hands/hips | Tight hamstrings, beginners needing support | Does not cushion knees by itself |

Use cases
- Kneeling core work on hardwood: mat + Bodyprox pads so kneecaps are not on thin foam alone.
- Beginner yoga: Gaiam block under hands in half forward fold; thick mat underneath.
- Small apartment: store block and pads with the rolled mat — lighter than buying a second ultra-thick mat.

FAQ
Do I need knee pads if I already have a 1/2-inch mat?
Often the mat is enough for yoga. Add pads when you do lots of kneeling strength work or still feel pressure on hardwood.
Yoga block vs thicker mat for knees?
A block changes geometry (support/height). Knee pads and mat thickness change cushioning. They solve different problems.
Are Bodyprox pads medical knee braces?
No. Catalog positions them as protective foam pads for sports/collision avoidance comfort — not a prescription brace. See a clinician for injuries.
Does YEShop show the live price?
No. See Amazon for current price.
